UPSC CDS Exam Pattern 2022

The UPSC CDS 1 2022 selection process consists of two stages:

(i) Written Examination

(ii) Interview for intelligence and personality test

Admission to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers Training Academy (OTA) will be done on the basis of the result of a written test followed by intelligence and personality test. Service Selection Board of the candidates who qualify in the written examination.

The right productive study plan and effective preparation strategies are a boon to prepare for any section in the most efficient manner. Candidates preparing for UPSC CDS 1 2022 written exam are advised to start with the syllabus, important topics, cut-offs, topic-wise topics first, mark your strong and weak areas. Practicing daily in a systematic and time bound manner not only helps in covering all the topics but also improves your skills. Solve previous years question papers, mock tests, quizzes etc with timer to adapt to the real time exam settings. Always remember to give yourself the much needed break in between the preparation.

How to prepare for UPSC CDS 2022 in English Language?

syllabus: Reading Comprehension, Spotting Errors, Sentence Rearrangement, Idioms and Phrases, Sequence of Sentences, Cloze Test (Fill in the blanks), Synonyms and Antonyms, Grammar, Vocabulary.

1. Modify through syllabus, exam pattern, cut-off

Candidates are advised to go through the syllabus, exam pattern, cut-off, previous years question paper, important topics and other important exam guidelines to prepare for the exam. The English Language section in UPSC CDS 1 2022 will be of total 100 marks and will be of 2 hours duration. The question papers of all subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers (test booklet) of General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as in English.

2. Penalty for wrong answers, avoid guessing

Candidates should note that there will be penalty (negative marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the objective type question papers. There are four options for answering each question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate. One third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty. If a candidate has given more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers is correct and that question will be punished with the same penalty as above. If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.

3. Check Section-wise Important Topics, Preparation Strategies, Practice Questions

The question paper will be designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English and use of working words. The key to scoring high in the English language section in UPSC CDS 2022 is a good command over English grammar and vocabulary. Candidates will be assessed for their skills in English grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Read newspapers, magazines, editorials and books. Mark new words and look up their meanings in the dictionary. Solve previous years question papers, mock tests, quizzes as much as possible to boost your performance.

reading comprehension: Regular practice is important to develop your speed, to understand the tone of the RC. Read the passage carefully and examine the topic to find the keywords and answers easily. Aim to do 4 to 5 RCs every day, make a habit of noting down important points, solve data-driven questions. Most importantly, the RC should be resolved calmly so that you do not have to revisit the passage over and over again.

Spotting errors: Spotting grammatically incorrect sentences requires a strong understanding of grammar and vocabulary. Brush up on basic rules of grammar, tenses, verbs, adverbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, singular and plural rules, vocabulary to detect errors in sentences. Regular reading practice will also help in solving error detection questions.

Sentence rearrangement: These questions involve rearranging the confused lines to make a sensible sentence. Strong vocabulary and grammar help find a logical order of lines. Look at the connectors to trace the flow. See articles, adverbs, definites, connectors, pronouns, etc. to take hints when arranging lines of sentences.

Idioms and phrases: Must have the knowledge and aim to expand your knowledge bank of the most common idioms and phrases in English. Practice at least 10 idioms and phrases every day during the preparation.

Sentence sequence: It requires a basic understanding of grammar to construct sentences. Sentence order can be correct only when one understands clauses (subject-object-verb), modifiers, adverbs, auxiliary verbs, indirect objects, prepositional phrases, etc. Always put the subject first. After completing the sentence sequence, read it again to get the proper flow of the sentence.

Cloze Test (Fill in the blanks): A good command on English Grammar, Vocabulary, Nouns, Pronouns, Tenses, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Adjectives, Subject-Verb, and Agreement Rules, etc., Idioms and Phrases, and Clauses is the Key to Solve the Cloze Test (Fill in the Blanks) . CDS question in english. Questions usually contain a clue so it is advised to read the sentences two or three times carefully.

synonyms antonyms: Candidates should be well aware that Synonyms are words or phrases which have similar meaning as the word in question whereas Antonyms are words or phrases which are opposite to the word in question. A good grasp of vocabulary is required to score high in Synonyms and Antonyms questions. Learn at least 10 -20 new words every day.
